After having seen them record the season finale live, I totally understand why they pre-record in the studio and then lip sync. They're literally performing the same dance numbers, start to finish, for fucking *hours*. You would destroy your voice in a matter of weeks if you were singing each time.
Though what really impressed me about Jonathan Groff is that during Bohemian Rhapsody, he was actually singing along with the recording of himself (the sound was REALLY high, but you could tell when he didn't quite match up with the recording), AND, that when he was pretending to play the white grand piano (yes, they DID stay that faithful to Freddie!), in between takes the actual pianist was coaching him on the bit that he was supposed to be playing, and during the shooting he was actually hitting the right notes :)
