What purpose does knowledge of Pon Farr serve? I'm with Isis on this one. (Which is not to say that concern over what people take for granted these days keeps me up at night, just that Pon Farr concerns me even less.)
Besides, as Isis also pointed out, there are many different styles of nerd, and not all include Star Trek.
