First of all, thanks to everyone for your offers of support, be it cash, food, crashspace, catsitting etc.

Next of all, the cats seem to be doing fine, show no signs of lung pathology and are being boarded at my super-awesome vet at an extremely reasonable, special "your house burned down" rate of just $80 a night. For five cats, that ain't a bad deal, considering what the roommate's vet wanted to charge (roughly that much per cat per nighr).

Third, between my credit cards and savings account, right now I am doing OK for liquid funds. I won't lie, things are tight and will be so for the next few months, but at least right now your kind offers of financial assistance are appreciated, not required.

My roommate and I are checked into a cheap little motel until Friday night. The insurance company will theoretically reimburse us for the expense until we're OK to move back in to the apartment, assuming that's an option -- I am on my way to meet with the landlord's insurance folks now and they will be making that determination. In a promising sign, the three houses down the block that were hit much worse by the fire have already been condemned, with large notices to that effect splashed across their front... formerly-porches, but my neighbors and I have not been visited by the orange sticker fairy.

The kitchen and laundry room were mostly untouched, with a (relatively) thin layer of soot and no further damage. The fridge still works, as do the washer and dryer, and most of the kitchenware will be functional after a good cleaning. I do wish I hadn't made a $210 grocery run on Sunday, as most of that food will have to be written off (alas poor pan of gluten-free fudge brownies I had made the night before and left out to cool on the counter, I hardly knew ye -- and let's not even get into the effort I had put into butchering that pork shoulder) but the stuff in cans should still be edible. Not that I keep much in cans, being a fresh produce kind of guy, but it's something.

I do not want to talk about my books, except to say that I know a lot of you thought that the nature and degree of my cataloging system was quite mad, but WHO'S THE CRAZY ONE NOW, HUH??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!

Glad you're doing ok for now and that the rooms-with-expensive-appliances survived. Glad you can provide an extensive book list to the insurers. Maybe just think of this as nature's way of telling you that you needed a whole new wardrobe :-> Hang in there!

OK, this is fantastic news and I am so happy that things seem to be working out for the best, especially when it comes to the cats. So great to hear that they are also relatively unscathed.

Here's hoping that you'll have permanent residence again very soon. Let us know if you need help with anything (including moving, if it comes to that).

Oh I'm glad about your cats. I was wondering where they were, as I was fairly certain that any hotel you found in this area probably weren't taking in five critters also.

I'm so relieved to hear the cats are doing well. Thinking about you guys, if something comes along for me to helpful with I will. But I somehow doubt sending you yarn would be terribly useful right now.

SO glad you're all okay, and that you're all being reasonably housed in the interim.

So like ... What's your system for cataloguing books? *curious*

In addition to an almost-complete catalogue at librarything.org (around 85% up to date), I also have a handwritten cross-referenced logbook and a spreadsheet on my computer referenced by author, year, edition, condition etc.
