You know what they don't have in the US? Custard creams. Oh man. It's been almost twenty years since I last had a custard cream, and it's not until today that I realized how much I miss it.

Also, trifle.

Yes, trifle!

I went to the trouble of tracking down a trifle recipe some years ago, so I could make it myself, but haven't actually done so. :(

Mmmm, trifle.

I miss meat pies. I used to get steak and cheese pies for lunch when studying abroad, and though Philly cheesesteaks are a delicious alternative, I would prefer the flaky crust.

I can probably buy a meat pie from Myers of Keswick before coming down on Wednesday...

Sure! If you can resist eating it on the bus, that is. ;) We can reheat it here.

I make it a point to make meat pies on a regular basis. And man, they're just as awesome every time.

There is nothing bad about meat pies. They combine meat and pie, which are in themselves two of the world's greatest things ever.

You know, if I thought they'd survive the post, I'd send you some custard creams. Gluten-free ones, even. (Are you supposed to be avoiding wheat? I can't remember.)

Thought so. Well, if you want to risk getting a box of powdered biscuits, I could always give it a shot. My son loves the g-f custard creams, so I know where to procure a decent supply...

Your son's allergic to wheat too? Or is it celiac?

Coeliac: he was diagnosed when he was two.

Ah. Well at least he'll never know what he's missing. Oh beer, how I weep for you...

Are the gf ones any good? Speaking from a wheat-eater's point of view?

You think that's bad: he's a Scotsman and he can't drink single malt whisky. Depressing, huh?

The custard creams, on the other hand, are pretty good. Crumblier than the wheat version, of course, but taste-wise just the same.

Tell me about it. I've got two bottles of Laphroiag that sit in my liquor cabinet taunting me with their wheaty goodness.

Then yes, I will take you up on your kind offer. How does this work?

Just PM me on Ran's with the address you want 'em sent to.

I am not sure what the difference between choux creme and custard cream is, but we have choux creme in Philadelphia. Yes we do! Too bad it's just average choux creme, though...

Choux cream is a creampuff. A custard cream is a type of biscuit that contains neither custard nor cream.

You know you can, theoretically, get them shipped from the UK, correct?

Or this place, which is apparently right outside Harrisburg

Shipping is more reasonable from this place:
