Since apparently it's important to some of you ([livejournal.com profile] lawbabeak), this is what I got myself for my birthday.

Nice! The stem is longer than I had imagined, but it's very cool. Have you used it yet?

Using it right now. That's a terrible idea with a sore throat, but it's my birthday, dammit.

Gorgeous, man, just gorgeous--may I ask what the inaugural blend is?

GL Pease's Barbary Coast.

Oooh, heard really nice things about that. How sweet is it? Sometimes the boozy ones can be a little cloying for me, but others, like Mac Baren's Plumcake, can fit the bill nicely, if I'm in the mood. If you're ever in Denver, there's the best tobacconist I've ever been to, for the discerning chap--may pick up some BC, next time I'm down.

It's not very sweet at all. Certainly not aromatic-sweet. I don't usually love the boozy ones, like the nautical-themed rum blends or wine-soaked blends like Da Vinci, but GL pease is a lovely smoke. It can burn a bit unevenly, but otherwise I quite recommend it as a mild, friendly smoke.

Perfect recommendation--had a briarful after Thanksgiving dinner, and it was everything I'd hoped. Certainly milder than what I'd expect, given the pungent red wine aroma I got when I cracked the seal--paired it with some Kelt, which is the best cognac I've sampled, if you haven't tried it, and brandy at both ends was a wonderful combo. I will say it was a bit gooey at first, but once set out for a wee bit it burned beautifully. We'll have to bullshit at length in re: such matters at some future con, hopefully at a hotel with a nice patio or balcony...

Pretty!

What are the non-gourd parts made of?

Turkish meerschaum clay for the bowl. Plastic stem.

"Meerschaum" is a delightful word. It's fun to say. You can pretend it is the snooty schadenfreude of meerkats.

This pipe says "Hobbit" to me. Or possibly Gandalf. Up to you, really.
