So I think I'm going to try fasting for a couple of days, see how that treats me. Never done it before, so it ought to be interesting.

If we're hanging out at anytime between now and 7PM on Sunday, I apologize in advance. I'm likely to be a cranky son of a bitch.

Stay hydrated.

It's a totally worthwhile experience and I wish you luck with it.

I used to fast all the time when I was a kid (as part of my parent's religion we had like 6 fast days each year), it's a great way to get a headache and be cranky and want to sleep all the time. :) So what exactly do you mean by fasting? Will you be drinking water? Juice? Broth? Nothing? Curious...among the ortho jews we didn't drink anything, there's no way I could keep that up for several days

Any zero-kcal fluid is fine. Water, tea, coffee, even diet cola (though probably not). Also sugarfree gum, which ought to be close enough to zero calorie to be fine.

ahh so you don't have to deal with "hairy tongue" that you get from not drinking for 25 hours :) Oh the ridiculous things I used to do...

So I've heard the headache and crankiness might actually be as much fat- and sugar-withdrawal as it is anything else. You know, the dopamine rush you get from eating delicious things stopping is bound to fuck you up a little.

Well, anyway, we'll see.

maybe? When I was a kid my mom was very strict about eating sweets and we had a really healthy diet (especially compared to now, ha) so not sure if that was the case, although I also don't remember being all cranky and headachey every time I fasted either.

What I do remember is right around like the 20th hour I start feeling really really horrible and need to take a nap, but after that I get a second wind and am fine and feel ok, and I hear similar things from my friends who do those lemonade fasts for days and days and days- that there is an initial hump to get over but after getting over that it gets a lot easier.

I've always found it to be great for mental focus. After the first 12 hours or so I stop thinking about food and I can get so much done. Sadly, the first 12 hours are unpleasant enough to nullify this benefit.

I did a fast when I had my tonsils out. Thankfully I had Percocet to zonk me thru it. And it wasn't my choice. I could only swallow little sips of water.
