Wearing long johns today for the first time in my adult life. Verdict: Warm, not too constricting (if you know what I mean), would be very comfortable if they weren't so damn itchy. Much better than dancer's tights for cutting the cold, which was my previous solution. It isn't really cold today -- I wanted to take them for a test drive on a day where I could remove them if I needed to without freezing my bits off.

My mom, when I moved here, bought me some super soft, super warm long johns.

Wintersilks has GREAT underlayers. Very soft. They don't last quite as well, but are much warmer.

What kind of material are they?

Definitely warm. I generally use silk or mid-weight synthetic (Patagonia Capilene 1 or 2, I believe) when I need long underwear, specifically to avoid itchiness. That said, I don't spend that much time outdoors -- this is just to make sure I don't freeze on my way to the subway.

Have you tried Underarmor? I swear by them. they don't itch at all and wick away moisture so you don't get chilled if you break a sweat.

I wear long johns every single day. I am wearing them right this second. Once it hits 40 degrees, they come out of the drawer until spring. I have several pairs made from various materials (normal waffle-fabric, fancy hippy techno-fabric), and some are less itchy than others. You just have to experiment. I couldn't live without them.

Second the recommendation on Winter Silks, which don't itch and are very comfy against your skin.

If silk doesn't make you itch, go with Winter Silks. Really. That's some good stuff. I think LLBean might have a slightly cheaper version but... they're a slightly cheaper version.

one year I just put a pair of loose silk drawstring pyjamas under jeans and was *very happy and warm*

The stuff compresses beautifully:)
