Anyone know if/where I can get black chicken in Philly? I want to give it a try.

ETA: When I say "get", I mean "source the ingredient", not "eat at a restaurant that serves it". Though I want to do that too, I guess.

Dear Lazyweb: What is black chicken (other than the coolest nickname anyone could have)?

My new goth polka band. Also:

It's a somewhat uncommon breed of small chicken with silky white feathers, black skin, black bones, very dark meat and what is reportedly a unique flavor. They're supposedly a great pet chicken as well.

Were you watching Top Chef Masters last night, or is this just a strange coincidence?

Weird. They just had a challenge last night that featured exotic proteins, including black chicken (and also kangaroo, duck tongue, a kind of clam that looks like a giant penis, etc.).

Anyway, I googled "black chicken" and Philadelphia and came up with two places in Chinatown that serve it. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the Asian grocery stores up that way have it available as well.

Penis clam? You mean geoduck?

Yeah, I found the two places that serve it too. Chinatown seems to be a likely place to start my hunt!

That is what I mean, yes. The winning dish included chopped up monkfish liver that was cooked, seasoned, and served inside the skin of a black chicken leg (with foot attached). It was really something.

Duck tongue is so very... Roman.

*ha* (it is an excellent nickname)
It's a breed of chicken, aka a "Silkie," that has black skin.

In any case, I unfortunately do not know the answer to your query. I am not sure I know where one could buy one in NYC, but I bet Chinatown would be a good start.

That NYT article you linked had some sources for it in your city, but understandably none in mine.

Why's it got to be about color?

You could steal one of the Zoo's silkies. They might not notice, and hey, if they did, think of the stories you could tell about it later!

Chinese, Filipino, and Vietnamese grocery stores would be your best bet. If you are on friendly terms with one of the owners, ask them if they can special order them for you. I have yet to see it regularly stocked in any Asian grocers I've been too, but I don't live in Philly, which is a much bigger city.

Forgot to mention, yes, they do taste slightly different than a regular chicken. More.... game-hen-ish I'd say? Tougher texture for sure. In Chinese cuisine the chicken is usually used in soups paired with medicinal herbs.
